Lack of college readiness an issue of protest, and debate

On the steps of City Hall, protestors from The Urban Youth Collaborative (UYC) chanted in English and Spanish, calling this past Thurs., Jan. 19th for a better college readiness program for young black and Latino students, and decrying what they pointed to as “abysmal” college preparedness rates under the Bloomberg administration.
"We're number one, not thirteen percent,” chanted the protestors, in reference to a statistical figure regarding the college readiness of black and Latino students.

No book club meeting this, but rather, a classroom full of high school freshmen.

New York City radio station WNYC announced the bands for the “Battle of the Boroughs,” a city-wide musical competition, this past Tues., Jan 17th.
Bands for the Bronx are Tyrone Birkett, Bodoma Grifuna, Cultural Band, RPG to the G-Spot, Tape Deck Museum, August-Hill, Chris Santiago, The Dorian Project, and Kevin Batchelor's Grand Concourse.

Bars were crowded around the city this past Sunday night for the Giants-49ers playoff game.
And the Applebee’s Restaurant in the Gateway Center of the Bronx was no exception.

In the Long Island Sound, just off City Island, is an island owned by the City, and operated and maintained by the Department of Corrections. It is usually referred to as Potter’s Field, though its proper name is Hart Island. Closed off to the public, the island serves as the City’s public cemetery for unclaimed bodies.

Multi-genre trumpeteer and composer Charlie Porter has played the world’s venues with verve and imagination that sets him apart from other jazz musicians.
This time, it was the Bronx’s turn to be serenaded.

In college, Brittany Maldonado was, as she describes it, conflicted between two different perceptions of beauty.
“Being a Puerto Rican woman, you are told that you have to be curvy and thick, so I would overeat when I was home to match that [image],” she explained. “[But] when I would go away to college, all of the women there were thin and this was considered beautiful also, so I ate less.”

This past Sat., Jan. 21st, residents of the Bronx, as did inhabitants of all the city, enjoyed the year’s first snowfall, with a crisp cold to match.
Many families took to nearby parks to amuse themselves, making snow angels and castles.

In a matter of days, the New York State Legislature will unveil new state and Congressional legislative districts.
This redistricting exercise takes place every decade as a result of the population data revealed by the U.S. Census. The loss of population results in a corresponding decrease in the number of districts, whereas a population increase is met with an increase in districts. For decades, despite the consistent increase in the Hispanic population, there have not been any new Congressional districts created that reflect a Hispanic majority..

Mauricio Gonzales, arrived in New York at the young age of 17 from Mexico, with a dream of sharing one of his traditions, specifically Mexican gastronomy.
He started working in restaurants, taking on whatever task came his way. The beginning, he admits, was hard, and it involved hours of dishwashing and long shifts involving any manner of menial tasks in kitchens across the city.
But he never shied away from the work.

Since founding Comunilife, I have worked with many New Yorkers from underserved communities – from children to seniors - and those living with HIV/AIDS or mental illness. As anyone working in healthcare today knows, one of the most significant challenges facing New York and our country as a whole is the staggering number of people who are unable to afford their prescription medications.
