“We’re in a beer frontier,” says Brian Duffy, resident beer geek at the recently opened Buddha Beer Bar in Washington Heights. 

Enticing customers to venture beyond basics like Budweiser and Coors Light, Buddha Beer Bar offers a global selection of twenty-four different beers on tap, eighteen bottled beers, and growlers to go.  Not sure which one to order?  No problem.

Duffy and his friendly team of bartenders will make a recommendation based on your personal preferences and their extensive knowledge of all things beer-related. 

And with their plans to constantly rotate the selection, you’ll never run out of new drafts to try.

Buddha Beer Bar, located at 4476 Broadway, is owned by James Lee, who has a long history in the restaurant business including his other Washington Heights endeavor, 181 Cabrini. 

With Buddha, Lee is going for a more casual atmosphere where customers can relax and catch their favorite team’s game on one of the bar’s many televisions, all while enjoying new beers from around the world.  Buddha Beer Bar also offers an extensive bourbon collection – “the brown stuff” as Lee calls it – and an assortment of wines.  And customers can choose from an eclectic menu of snacks inspired by Lee’s native Korea as well as his travels to places like Peru, Laos, Hong Kong, Egypt, and Turkey.

Orchestrating the largest beer selection in northern Manhattan was no small task. 

“I knew if I was going to do it right, I needed a real beer guy,” Lee said. 

That’s where Duffy came in. 

When the recession dealt a blow to his career as an accountant four years ago, Duffy began pursuing his interest in beer.  Visiting breweries and reading books on the history of the industry, Duffy eventually found himself working at Bronx Ale House, where he spent three years honing his skills behind the bar while learning everything he could about the business of beer. 

“I’m still learning,” Duffy says today.  “I never want to know everything there is to know.” 

At Buddha Beer Bar, he’s putting his expertise to use and passing his knowledge on to the next generation, including Chanelle Rolón, the twenty-two-year-old head bartender at Buddha. 

Upon entering the brightly colored bar, it’s likely the first voice you’ll hear will be Rolón’s welcoming you in and inviting you to take a seat. 

And with stories of the Dogfish pumpkin beer she first fell in love with or her trip to Ireland where she learned the perfect pour of Guinness, Rolón is exactly who you’d want to chat with over a pint of whatever draft she has expertly suggested for you.

Neighborhood residents seem to be responding. 

At three o’clock on Super Bowl Sunday, Buddha Beer Bar was quickly filling up. 

Manny Ortiz, born and raised in Washington Heights, said his friend who loves craft beers tweeted about the new bar in the neighborhood so he decided to check it out and was quickly converted. 

“Now I can come here for a drink instead of going downtown,” he said as he sipped a pint of Mary’s Maple Porter from Brooklyn Brewery. 

Asked when he planned to return to Buddha Beer Bar, Ortiz replied, “I’ll probably be back tomorrow.”

El orquestar la selección de cervezas más grande en el Norte de Manhattan no fue tarea fácil. “Sabía que si iba a hacerlo bien, necesitaba un verdadero hombre de cerveza”, dijo Lee. Ahí fue donde entró Duffy.

Cuando la recesión asestó un golpe a su carrera como contable cuatro años atrás, Duffy comenzó a perseguir su interés en la cerveza. Visitando cervecerías y leyendo libros sobre la historia de la industria, eventualmente Duffy se encontró a si mismo trabajando en Bronx Ale House, donde pasó tres años perfeccionando sus destrezas detrás de la barra mientras aprendía todo lo que podía del negocio de la cerveza.

“Todavía sigo aprendiendo”, dice Duffy hoy. “Yo nunca quiero saber todo lo que hay que saber”. En Buddha Beer Bar, está usando su experiencia y pasando su conocimiento a la próxima generación, incluyendo Chanelle Rolon, la principal bartender de 22 años en Buddha.

Manny Ortiz, nacido y criado en Washington Heights, dijo que su amigo quien ama las cervezas artesanales escribió en Twitter acerca de la nueva barra en el vecindario así es que decidió ver y fue rápidamente convertido.

“Ahora puedo venir aquí para un trago en lugar de ir al Bajo Manhattan”, dijo el mientras tomaba un poco del Mary’s Maple Porter de Brooklyn Brewery.

Se le preguntó cuando pensaba regresar a Buddha Beer Bar, Ortiz contestó, “probablemente regrese mañana”.
